From the Flinders we drove south. If you're ever in the area, be sure to visit Julie at the Cradock Pub; she's a first-class chef. I don't see a website for it, but you may be able to find a short description here.
We spent a single night in Adelaide, doing laundry and enjoying truly amazing steaks at Gaucho's. (You should be getting the impression by now that we ate well everywhere.)
Next morning we caught a short flight to Kangaroo Island, sometimes billed as the "Galapagos of Australia" because of the presence of species absent elsewhere on the continent.
We stayed at Stranraer, an elegant 1920-vintage house now run as a B&B by Lyn and Graham Wheaton. Stranraer is set on a working property producing lamb, wool, and grain; reading the planning documents in the Stranraer library and touring the property with Graham is an education in itself. Graham served as guide for several outings, showing us the agricultural aspects of the island and a good selection of wildlife (including the "Fairy" penguins at Penneshaw). Lyn's description of her experience with virtually all aspects of the school system on the island was another part of our stay that we thought was especially worthwhile. And Lyn is an amazing chef, turning out multiple multicourse meals made from great local ingredients.
When not with Lyn and Graham we attended tours given by Adventure Charters of Kangaroo Island. The guides gave us a thorough introduction to the island and a close look at Flinders Chase National Park.
I regret that I didn't get any photos of the fairy penguins. You can visit them only during the dark, and I was warned that flash photography and ordinary flashlights aren't permitted, so I didn't take my camera on that part of the trip. What I didn't know is that at Penneshaw there are lights in the nesting area. My guess is that you can get decent photos at ISO 800 equivalent with an f/2.8 lens. Something to keep in mind if you get a chance to visit KI.

Our next destination was Tasmania, but we had a long layover in Adelaide, so after leaving Kangaroo Island we spent an enjoyable few hours at the Central Market. Any serious foodie would be impressed by the Market; there was an amazing selection of fresh and prepared food, some of it highly unusual or elaborate.
